I was the first to read this book and it was given to me by a dear friend of mine and of the library. I finished it in Duck Key and wonder where it went next. It was such a treat to read such an amazing book. It is such a fine example of literature and I am blessed once again by reading it!

I loved reading To Kill A Mockingbird again. It was given to me by my friend Susan Swagler, Book Editor for Portico Magazine. It was wonderful to read the book at this time of year since there are so many references to camellias, azaleas , and gardening. I read excerpts from the first half of the book aloud to one of my children, and it was such a hit. Scout and Jem's friendship with Dill is a particular treasure. I have passed my copy on to my friend, Mark Stith, Editor for Portico Magazine. Happy Reading from one Mockingbird fan to all of you!

The book is a time capsule of racial, moral and ethical issues viewed through the eyes of an intelligent child trying to fit into a society without conforming to its long held standards. Growing up is never easy and going back to childhood, crawling around in Scout's skin, helped me remember my own experiences growing up in a small Alabama town.

What a treat to read this classic again after so many years. It takes sheer genius to tell this story with all its adult implications through the eyes of an innocent child. Lee captures the people and values of the day with all their depth and hypocrisies using humor and insight.

What an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, having grown up myself in a small Alabama town. As a matter of fact, I grew up two blocks from the Jackson County (AL)Courthouse, where the Scottsboro boys trial was held. Lee used that landmark case as the basis for the trial in Mockingird. Thankfully, our justice system has progressed beyond what it was then. I thought the way she showed the different social classes in Maycomb was brilliant. This book was much more relevant to me as an adult than it was as a student.

I have seen the movie a few times but never read the book. I could not put it down until I was through. My mother-in-law was a child in the South in the 30's and she said the book was just as she remembered her childhood. There are many great scenes, but one of my favorites is when Scout and Jem make a morphodite snowman with a mud base. It reminded me of last weekend when I drove down the street late afternoon after the snow and saw a 15 inch high snow creature. The front yard was devoid of snow except for this small creation. I couldn't tell if it had originally been a snowman or a snowdog. As a 10 year-old child in Wichita, Kansas, I remember a mid-April snow. I made a snowbunny the week before Easter. A newspaper photographer took a picture of me with it, and the picture was in the paper.

I read this book many, many years ago, but reading it again, and being a parent now, I found the child's perspective on events so much more intriguing. My own children have no understanding of how accepted racism once was, yet I remember as a child hearing old people make comments so similar to the ones made by the well-meaning ladies of the church circle. While those old folks were just perpetrating the ideas they were taught growing up in depression era deep south, today any thinking person should be able to see the error of such blind acceptance of past injustice, and hopefully they do.

I was moved by the gratitude the African-American community demonstrated toward Atticus after such a good defense of Tom Robinson. I appreciate the adequate depiction of the South as rendered by Harper Lee. Without the "Big Read" I probably would have never read such a book nor participated in the local events. Special thanks to all Public Libraries in Jefferson County that participated and to the grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Voted best novel of the century. It adds to the many authors from Alabama (and monroeville) that should make this state proud. Me and my friend wondered how the author considered it a love story and not a coming of age story. The themes of human nature and morals are also points. A classic that most recognize!

So many "truisms" about life and living. Having grown up in the South and lived in some really small towns, I was taken back to that time through Harper Lee's words. I can remember knowing people just like the characters in the book, both good and bad. An easy read and one I would recommend highly.

Rereading this book as an adult gave me a different perspective. It is interesting to see how far we have come in terms of race, roles of women, methods of communication - person to person vs. electornic, living our lives within earshot of neighbors vs. isolation while huddled around the AC and the TV.

Comments:
I read this book in high school, but I don't think I really got it the first time. I am so glad I re-read this as an adult. This is a wonderful book that everyone should read!

Comments:
I love this book. I have read it multiple times, and I would recommend it to anyone. It has such a great and inspiring storyline behind it. Scout would absolutely have to be my favorite; she grows up tremendously throughout the novel. This is a great read.
